Vikings Hockey

Vision – To provide local Steamboat youth hockey players unique hockey experiences at little to no cost at a quality and standard typical of NCAA or elite programs.

Purpose – To teach, uphold, and enforce the character qualities and values necessary when facing adversity through the game of hockey as represented by “The First Viking”.

The Steamboat Vikings play in honor of Drew Rushton, “The First Viking”. Drew Rushton set the example for great courage, grit, toughness, determination, and a “no-quit” attitude during his battle with Aplastic Anemia and associated diseases. He faced adversity head-on and gave his all until his passing in December 2018. The Vikings embrace the warrior mentality Drew exhibited and strive to live and play the same way. His example is the foundation for the philosophies and values of the Viking Hockey program.

Mission – To structure training, team, and tournament opportunities for local Steamboat hockey players to develop and grow through the Viking Hockey philosophies and values.

Strategy – To fill the void left by a limited CHSAA hockey schedule through a structured fall and spring program for local Steamboat U18 hockey players.

  • An Invitational Team – Players are selected and invited to participate at the discretion of the Program Director (Yancey Rushton) based on factors including but not limited to level of play/skill level, behavior, grades, history of disciplinary issues, ability to function well on the team, etc.
    • Playing for the Vikings is a privilege not a right. No one is entitled to participate. No one is guaranteed a spot.
  • A Subsidiary of Steamboat Springs Youth Hockey Association – SSYHA is the officially registered non-profit organization under USA Hockey and Colorado Amateur Hockey Association through which Vikings teams play.
    • Participants and Parents will abide by all SSYHA Bylaws, Policies, Rules, Codes, and Values.
    • The Vikings Program will have additional requirements and policies, but those of SSYHA will form the foundation and minimum standard

2019 Fall Program information

The Vikings will serve to fill the void for high school players participating in the CHSAA season that desire a longer, more traditional hockey season.

There will be one U18 fall high school team registered under USA Hockey within the structure of SSYHA

The team will play in one fall tournament, approximately 10 league games in the CPHL, and in the fall playoff when that spot is earned

U18 hockey players that will participate in high school hockey and desire to commit to a fall hockey program

Players must be enrolled in high school, academically eligible by SSYHA standards, with no behavioral issues

Players that are bantam-aged who intend on playing SSYHA bantam hockey are not eligible for the team as the bantam program will start mid-September

Bantam hockey will start in mid-September and SSYHA offers an excellent program for development through practices and consistent competition in league and tournament play. The Mountain Militia are also offering Bantam AA and A level teams this season for more play.

Players participating in a fall sport are not eligible for the team

We encourage multi-sport athletes and know there will be many playing football, golf, cross-country, soccer, etc. We hope these athletes excel in their fall sport and are excited to hit the ice when the CHSAA season starts in November

Practices will be open to ALL athletes desiring to skate and can fit it around their sports schedule. So, training is available to all.

Players must be capable of competing at the Tier 2, high school level
